Vassili Karanassios

Biography

Vassili Karanassios is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada) and a co-founder of a degree-program in nano-technology engineering at the same University. Professor Karanassios received his Ph. D. from the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada) and was a Post Doctoral Fellow at McGill University (Montreal, Canada). In 2009, he held a Leverhulme award in the UK where he was a visiting Professor in Chemistry (Sheffield University), an Overseas Fellow of Churchill college (Cambridge University, UK), and a visiting Professor of Engineering (Cambridge University, UK) in the Center for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE). Professor Karanassios and his group published (among others) on microfluidics and nanofluidics, on 3D printing and on rapid prototyping, on spectral interference correction using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Deep Learning, and on smartphone-enabled data acquisition and signal-processing from a variety of sensors for on-site chemical analysis and (potentially) for IoT applications.

Biography

Dr. Simon Johnson, Chief Technologist within Printed Electronics at the Centre for Process Innovation. In his current role Simon acts as a knowledge expert in Printable Electronics, supporting strategic and development activities in the business. While at CPI Simon has developed the electronics design and integration team to provide product design capability in the field of flexible electronic systems. He has lead the development of processes for the assembly of hybrid flexible electronic systems including printed sensors, wireless sensor systems and roll to roll circuit design. In previous roles as an academic at the University of Durham and also in industry, Simon has worked in many aspects of electronics from electronic device design and development to electronic systems and software development. He has published in electronic device failures and electronic test and has developed new electronic products for a wide range of industries. Simon studied Physics with Microelectronics at the University of Leicester, a Master of Engineering in IC Design at Durham followed by a PhD in IC Failure Mechanisms.
